Living in Wyoming, PA — The Monument Borough

Wyoming is one of the smallest boroughs in this guide — 3,097 residents at the 2020 Census — and one of the most historically consequential addresses in Pennsylvania. It gives its name to the entire Wyoming Valley, and it holds the monument that marks what happened here.

One clarification before you search, because it trips up nearly everyone: Wyoming and West Wyoming are two separate boroughs. West Wyoming is its own municipality with its own government and a 2020 population of 2,631. They sit side by side and share a school district, but they are not the same place, and a listing in one is not a listing in the other.

Things to Do

The Wyoming Monument is the borough’s defining landmark — it marks the burial site of those killed in the Battle of Wyoming on July 3, 1778, one of the bloodiest episodes of the Revolutionary War frontier and the event that gave this valley its place in American history. For anyone who cares about where they live having a story, it is hard to beat living beside it.

Beyond the monument, Wyoming trades on position. Pittston’s revitalized Main Street and its restaurant row are minutes downriver, West Pittston’s Cherry Blossom Festival is next door each May, and both Wilkes-Barre and Scranton are roughly twenty minutes away in opposite directions.

Outdoors & Parks

The Susquehanna defines the borough’s eastern edge, and the Back Mountain’s parks and trails — Frances Slocum State Park among them — are a short drive west. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, which carries an Avoca address and sits in Pittston Township, is minutes away.

Schools

Wyoming is served by the Wyoming Area School District, covering roughly 26 square miles across six municipalities: Wyoming, West Wyoming, Exeter, West Pittston, Harding and Falls Township.

There is a district building right in the borough: Tenth Street Elementary School serves grades 1 through 3 in Wyoming. The district’s other buildings are John F. Kennedy Elementary (kindergarten and Head Start) and the Wyoming Area Secondary Center (grades 7–12), both in Exeter, and Montgomery Avenue Elementary (grades 4–6) in West Pittston.

Everyday Essentials

Groceries, pharmacies and daily retail run through Exeter, West Pittston and Pittston, all within minutes. Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, operated by the nonprofit Tenor Health Foundation since February 2026, is the nearest hospital with an emergency department, and Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton is the region’s Level II trauma center.

The Homes

Wyoming is a small, established borough of modest and mid-sized homes dating largely to the coal era, on a compact grid between the river and the hillside. Inventory is naturally thin in a borough of three thousand people — there are simply not many houses, so when something good comes up on the right street it does not sit.

Because the borough fronts the Susquehanna, flood zone matters on the low side of town. Get the flood determination and an insurance quote on any riverside parcel before you offer.
