Living in Lake Ariel, PA — Lake Country in Wayne County
Lake Ariel is a village in Wayne County, named for the 239-acre lake at its center. It sits in the North Pocono corridor between Scranton and the big Wayne County lakes, and it is a place people move to for a specific reason: they want to live on or near water without leaving commuting range of the Lackawanna Valley.
One thing to be clear about from the start: Lake Ariel is a village and postal address, not a municipality of its own. A Lake Ariel address sits inside a surrounding Wayne County township, and which township determines your taxes, your services and sometimes your school assignment. Confirm it on any specific property.
Outdoors & Parks
The water is the point. Lake Ariel itself covers 239 acres, and Lake Wallenpaupack — the third-largest lake in Pennsylvania — is a short drive east, with boating, fishing and a full shoreline recreation economy. Gouldsboro State Park and its 250-acre lake are to the south, and state forest and game lands fill in around them.
Between them, this is one of the best-supplied corners of Northeastern Pennsylvania for anyone who owns a boat, a kayak or a fishing rod.
Schools
Lake Ariel falls within the North Pocono School District, which serves southern Lackawanna County and the extreme southern end of Wayne County. The district’s Jefferson Elementary School is in Lake Ariel, at 825 Lions Road, with the district headquartered in Moscow.
Because the area sits at the edge of the district’s boundary, verify the assigned schools on the exact address rather than assuming from the Lake Ariel mailing address.

Things to Do
Recreation drives the calendar — the lakes in summer, the state parks and trails year-round, and the Wallenpaupack shoreline economy for dining and marinas. Honesdale, the Wayne County seat, is a short drive north for Main Street restaurants and Wayne Memorial Hospital, and Scranton is roughly half an hour west.
Everyday Essentials
Day-to-day retail runs locally and toward Hamlin and Honesdale, with the full Scranton network within a reasonable drive. Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale is the nearest hospital with an emergency department for most of Wayne County.
The Homes
Lake Ariel inventory divides into three fairly distinct groups, and they behave differently: true waterfront, homes inside private lake communities with association dues and amenities, and ordinary residential and acreage properties with no lake attachment at all. All three carry a Lake Ariel address and they are not interchangeable.
Before you write an offer, get clear on whether the property includes deeded lake rights or a dock slip, what the association charges and what it covers, who maintains the road, whether the home is built for year-round occupancy or was originally seasonal, and whether it is on well and septic. In lake country those answers are the difference between a good buy and an expensive surprise.
