Living in Berwick, PA — A River Town That Built Tanks
Berwick is a Susquehanna borough of roughly 10,300 residents (2020 Census) in Columbia County, paired with Bloomsburg as the two anchors of this stretch of the river. It is an industrial town with a real manufacturing past — and one specific chapter worth knowing.
During the Second World War, tanks were built in Berwick. The ground where they were tested is now a public park, which is a fairly remarkable second act for a piece of industrial land.
What You Need to Know About Healthcare
We put this up front rather than burying it, because it is the single most important practical fact about living in Berwick, and a lot of listings and older websites still get it wrong.
Berwick Hospital Center ended emergency department services on September 17, 2022. The hospital does not accept emergency admissions and does not perform surgical procedures. That closure remains in effect. There is no emergency room in Berwick.
The nearest emergency department is Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital — a nonprofit acute-care hospital with 76 beds and a full ER, a short drive up the river in Bloomsburg.
None of this is a reason not to buy in Berwick. It is a reason to know your drive time to Bloomsburg before you need it, and to factor it in the way you would factor a commute. Anyone who tells you Berwick has a hospital with an ER is working from outdated information.
Outdoors & Parks
⭐ Test Track Park is the standout, and its history is the reason it exists. The land was once used as a road race course and as the testing ground for tanks built in Berwick during the Second World War. Today it is a riverside community park with roughly a mile of trail for walking, running and biking, a floating boat launch, wide shoreline for fishing, a disc golf course and open green space, hosting local events through the year.
The Susquehanna itself is the region’s recreational spine, and the Susquehanna Greenway connects riverside trail segments through this stretch.
Things to Do
Berwick and Bloomsburg function as a pair — the two towns share a metropolitan area, and Bloomsburg’s downtown, university and the largest fair in Pennsylvania are all a short drive upriver. Locally, Test Track Park and the riverfront carry the outdoor calendar.
Schools
Berwick is served by the Berwick Area School District.
Luzerne County Community College operates one of its seven satellite dedicated centers in Berwick, which puts two-year and workforce-training programs inside the borough.

Everyday Essentials
Berwick carries its own retail and services as a working borough of its size, with Bloomsburg’s larger commercial corridors nearby. For emergency care, see the healthcare section above — that is Bloomsburg.
The Homes
Berwick is an industrial river town, and the housing reflects that history: a substantial stock of older singles and doubles built when the factories were running, on a walkable borough grid, at price points well below the Wyoming Valley and far below the Poconos. For buyers priced out elsewhere, and for investors working small multifamily, that gap is the entire argument.
The borough fronts the Susquehanna, and this stretch of river has a serious flood history — the 2011 flood was severe enough to cancel the Bloomsburg Fair upriver for only the second time in its history. Get the flood zone, base flood elevation and an insurance quote on any low-lying parcel before you write an offer. We will pull them for you.
